Is it too late to start strength training at 60 or 70?

No, it isn't too late: people start strength training in their 60s, 70s and later, as long as they begin with an assessment and build up gradually. The key is a coach who starts where you are, not where a class is.

One of our members, Mike Luzio, started with us around 69 and now trains in an advanced kettlebell class. In his own words:

"I had zero background in weight training when I started at Underground Gym at the age of 69. Now 72 and still training 3 times a week. I've made progress in balance, range of motion, flexibility, & eliminating pain. Coach Sergei challenges me safely and I am so grateful for the quality of life improvement he has given me." — Mike Luzio, member

How much exercise do adults over 60 need?

Adults 65 and older should aim for at least 150 minutes of moderate activity a week, at least 2 days of muscle-strengthening, and activities that improve balance. That's the CDC's guideline for older adults.

Walking covers much of the first part. The strength and balance parts are where coaching helps most, and they're what our sessions are built around. Your coach sets the right number of sessions for you at your consultation.

How do you lower your risk of falling?

Stronger legs and hips and regular balance practice are two of the best things you can do to lower your risk of falling. Both are part of every program we build for adults over 60.

The CDC reports that more than one out of four older people falls each year, and that falls can be prevented. The NIH's bone health guide explains that strong muscles help us balance and reduce the risk of falling and breaking bones. In practice that means coached work like standing up from a chair without your hands, carrying weights, stepping and balance drills.

What happens in your first sessions?

Your first visit is a free consultation: we talk through your goals and health history, do an InBody scan and a movement screen, and you leave with a plan. Your first sessions then teach the basics at a pace that suits you.

Those basics are the movements of everyday life: getting up from a chair, bending to pick something up, carrying bags, stepping up a stair, and keeping your balance. Your coach chooses the starting level and adjusts every exercise as you go. You can see what the scan measures on our InBody scan page.

Group classes or a personal trainer: which is better for seniors?

Both work: choose 1-on-1 personal training for the most attention, or a small group if you'd like company and a lower cost. Your free consultation is where we decide together.

What if I have arthritis, a joint replacement or a bad back?

Most of our members over 60 arrive with something: arthritis, a joint replacement, an old back problem. We build your program around it, and we ask you to check with your doctor first if you have a medical condition, a recent surgery or a joint replacement.

Tell us what your doctor or physical therapist has said, and we work within it.

If your back is your main concern, see our back pain and movement program. For gentle, supported stretching of the hips, lower back and knees, see Pravilo stretching (REVIVE).

Is strength training good for women over 60?

Yes. Strength training is good for women and men over 60: it helps keep muscle, and resistance exercise can help make bones stronger. That matters because bone and muscle both decline with age.

The NIH's bone health guide notes that resistance exercises put stress on bones, so they can make bones stronger. If you have osteoporosis or osteopenia, tell us at your consultation and get your doctor's guidance; we'll choose exercises that fit.

Who coaches the sessions?

Your program is led by founder and head coach Sergei Karaliou, with our team of coaches. Sergei holds RKC Level 1 and Level 2, StrongFirst Level 1 and Level 2, and CK-FMS and Functional Movement Screen certifications, and has more than 25 years of coaching experience, 16 of them in Red Bank.

From Sergei: "Every program we write is personal. It's built around your fitness level, any health issues or past injuries you bring in, and the goals you want to reach long term. The real job isn't one great workout. It's building habits that become part of your life."

How much does it cost?

Your price depends on the format and how often you train. Plans are week-to-week, with no long contract, and options start from $45 a week. You'll get an exact price at your free consultation.

There's no pressure to commit at the consultation. You leave knowing where you stand and which plan fits you, whether you join or not.
