Combat Disciplines

Muay Thai Kickboxing is a unique blend of a 2000-year old martial art with a
rich tradition, powerful and spectacular full-contact ring sport and the most
effective strength-endurance and cardiovascular workouts you can find. The
originators of Muay Thai were ancient Thai warriors that tested it’s effectiveness
on the battlefields and, later, in the ring. Today the Royal Thai Army, as well as
members of US NAVY SEALS and CIA, use it for unarmed combat training.

Muay Thai is famous for it’s explosive kicks, powerful knee and elbow strikes
and boxing arsenal along with standing wrestling and throws. All of the body’s
natural tools are utilized to create an effective and efficient weapon. The Thai
system of unarmed combat and the conditioning it required for its success are
unparalleled for people of all sizes, both males and females.

Submission Grappling is a powerful blend of wrestling arts such as Russian
Sambo, Freestyle Wrestling, Greco-Roman Wrestling, Catch As A Catch Can
Wrestling, Judo, Ju-Jitsu and others. It combines takedowns and throws with
control and submissions (joint locks and chokes) on the ground. A very important
part of the curriculum is the ability to fall in any direction without hurting yourself.

No fighter's arsenal is complete without grappling as has been proven countless
times in Ultimate Fighting Championship matches as well as street
confrontations. Submission Grappling takes the best from every grappling
discipline and combines it into an unstoppable system of fighting.

Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) is where everything comes together: the Stand-Up,
the Clinch and the Ground. It is the Ultimate in martial arts training when one truly
becomes like water and can defend himself in any environment and against any
opponent (a boxer, a wrestler, a kickboxer or a submission fighter). The basic
idea is to take your opponent out of his comfort zone (take a boxer to the ground,
for example) and keep him in your comfort zone. In order to do so, one has to
become fairly proficient with all ranges and methods of unarmed combat, while
at the same time he has to become an expert in one or two ranges and/or
methods.

Self Defense is a broad term that defines a spectrum of tactics and tecniques
from a variety of Combat Arts, such as Muay Thai, Russian Sambo, Krav Maga
and Ju Jitsu. A big part of the curriculum, along with "standard" assortment of
strikes, takedowns, chokes and joint locks are crime awareness, emotional
stability and "dirty" tactics, as well as weapon use and disarms.

Strength & Conditioning Disciplines

Bodyweight Conditioning is a broad term for a combination of joint mobility
and active / dynamic / static flexibility work, yoga and gymnastics, as well as
hardcore calisthenics. At the Underground Gym we firmly believe that any athlete
should get a firm grasp of his body (but not mastery of his body because it will
take a looong time, just look at Olympic champions in gymnastics) before
attempting to operate an external load. You should realize, if you haven’t yet, that
any tool you pick up is just an extension of your body. They say the same thing in
Combat Arts about using a weapon.

Russian Kettlebell Lifting is an explosive blend of strength, power, flexibility
and cardiovascular training all in one package with one of the most ancient and
efficient exercise tools in the world -- Russian kettlebell. The later are a great tool
for building a strong, powerful and athletic body. For years they have been used
by strongman, athletes and military, and now also fitness enthusiasts, who have
realized that athletic training is the best way to get in real shape and to look
good, whether for sports or life.

There is a sport that utilizes kettlebells exclusively as a tool of choice – it is
called the Kettlebell Sport, as you would imagine, or Girevoi Sport in its
Motherland’s Russian. It consists out of three competition lifts: Double Jerks,
Single Arm Snatch (one arm, than the other) and Long Cycle Clean & Jerk
(where you clean the bells each time before you jerk them). The later is tested in
a separate competition from the first two.

Each competitor is given one attempt to perform as many reps as he can within
the ten minute time frame in a technically correct manner with a fixed weight. One
cannot set the bell(s) down until he/ she is finished. The men perform the Jerks
first and the Snatches at least half an hour later, while the women follow the
opposite order. The weight of the kettlebell(s) is (are) 16 kilos (36 lbs) for boys
and women, 24 kilos (53 lbs) for intermediate men and 32 kilos (70 lbs) for
advanced men.

Kettlebell Sport is probably the most brutal strength endurance and power-
endurance sport in the world. Just to give you an idea, some world-class
competitors perform 130 Jerks in ten minutes with a pair of seventy pound bells
and 270 Snatches with the same size bell half an hour later! That means a body
that can explode again, and again and again. That also means a mind that does
not quit.

Olympic Weightlifting in its modern version consists out of two competition
lifts: Clean & Jerk and Snatch. The weight has to be lifted once (each competitor
is given three attempts) in a technically correct manner to determine the winner. It
is not uncommon for the world-class athlete to lift double or even triple their
weight overhead!

Olympic weightlifters are some of the most powerful and flexible athletes in the
world, as their training involves lifting (jumping with) a barbell overhead in one
(Snatch) or two (Clean & Jerk) fast and fluid motions and landing in extreme
positions balancing the bar on the front of the shoulders or on locked out arms
overhead. While there are only two competition lifts there are probably more than
a hundred assistant exercises, which are also fantastic for development of lifting
mechanics, strength, flexibility and power.
