When I first came to Underground Gym few years ago, I weighted around 140 lb, which combined with my 6 ft height made me a very skinny guy for my age. I was eager to gain some muscle as fast as possible, and was really surprised to see that Greg’s methods forgo a typical low-weight-high-reps cookie cutter solution. I started training with Greg at the Underground Gym in September of 2011. Greg was recommended to me by a long-time friend and trainer who had moved on to Florida. I am in law enforcement and was looking for a different approach to my training apart from the traditional cross-fit gyms that had become the popular trend. Without any real methodology to their training, these gyms became very boring for me and ultimately non-productive. When I finally spoke to Greg to discuss my training goals we spoke about his approach to conditioning and training that involved various phases of functional mobility training, combat conditioning and weight based training that were all integrated. I started going to Greg 3 months after Rotator Cuff surgery. I needed mobility in shoulder, wanted to learn Systema. I was 61 years old and have been professionally involved in martial arts for over 30 years. I had never seen any martial art with this philosophy which adopted these very natural human movements. Many talk about animal movements, but the power of a human movement combined with human intelligence and instinct is formidable. Greg was able to help me regain full mobility more than the physical therapy and yoga I was taking. So, when I conceded (due to pain) that I would finally get the Total Knee Replacement, I knew I would need his help and again stopped the Systema classes and focused with Greg on strength and muscle development.
