Bodyweight Training is a broad term that incorporates various calisthenics, Yoga postures, Gymnastic exercises, Bar exercises, Gymnastic Ring exercises, Ground Engagements, Combat Acrobatics and other bodyweight training modalities.
If you think about it, any training tool such as barbell, dumbbell or kettlebell – any object, period – is just an extension of your body. They say the same thing in Martial Arts about using a weapon.
So it just makes sense that at the Underground Gym we firmly believe that any athlete should get a firm grasp of his bodyweight and then continuously work on improving his/her margins.
On the other hand, we also believe that weight training in any form (Olympic weightlifting, kettlebell training, odd object lifting, etc.) is a great addition to pure bodyweight training and both modalities are a part of the whole conditioning picture, rather then two fighting opposites. At the Underground Gym both training modalities are incorporated and integrated into a complete and well rounded training program.
However, in some cases, such as traveling, military deployment, large group training and others, one might find himself/herself in a situation with limited or no access to weights (in whatever form, including sandbags and rocks). With enough knowledge of universal training principals in general and bodyweight exercises in particular, your body becomes the best-equipped gyms ever designed and such an individual could attain / maintain a great level of physical attributes across a broad spectrum of parameters, including:
- Range of Motion
- Strength
- Power
- Speed
- Agility
- Cardiovascular Endurance
- Mental Toughness
Indeed, despite popular misconceptions that bodyweight training is limited to push ups and crunches and is only good for developing endurance, bodyweight training can target any training objective quite effectively. Your body can perform an astonishing number of movements, from relatively easy ones to extremely challenging.
These movements could be easily scaled up or down and therefore adjusted to the training level and specific goals of an individual. You can work anaerobically or aerobically, you can work super slow, very fast, hold a static contraction or mix all three together… The variety of training methods and exercises is just endless.
Your body is your gym and with just a few tools, like gymnastic rings and a pull up bar, or without any tools at all you can get a world class workout and world class conditioning. Study your body, explore its possibilities and apply these discoveries into your training. With some diligent and consistent practice you will be rewarded with amazing athletic abilities and a great level of fitness.
